I was reading an ad on the subway last night, it was for a college, one of their students discovered the first vaccine for polio. I probably knew the guy's name for five minutes in a health class back in the day but now, I just have no idea. That got me to thinking about how society celebrates such meaningless achievements...I mean, I know more about Johnny Knoxville's next movie (it looks pretty funny by the way) than I know about people who have really achieved something, people who have moved us forward! That's why for the whole month of November, bobborden.com is celebrating America's REAL heros. Real hero #1:
Dr. Jonas Edward Salk
Inventor of the first polio vaccine
Tomorrow's Real Hero...Oh crap, today's the last day in November...damn.
Hey, look at this little car:
Small car
Ha ha, how cool is that?! I took that in Hoboken on Thanksgiving. Those crazy brits can build a mean car. Speaking of crazy brits, I think my friend English Weasel had a birthday a week or two ago -- happy 30th! I'm hoping I have the name/age right...let me know Carl.
That's it!
Best,
Bob

It hit me yesterday morning in the shower, 'I forgot to buy soap, again!' I have to get these lavender-scented nightmares out of my life! I should have made a list but I talked myself out of it. I thought I'd see it and buy it...but I never walked down the soap aisle. I did pick up a can of whole cashews for $3.99 -- that's a sweet price!
Have you ever seen Matchstick Men?

I saw it over the weekend and I liked it. I remember hearing some not so good things when it came out. That just goes to show you, you have to see things for yourself and make up your own mind. Cage was good and Sam Rockwell was good too...Did you ever see Confessions of a Dangerous Mind? That's a good one with Sam Rockwell, it should have made him a huge star. Maybe he is, I don't know. That's it for Bob's Hollywood Report, ha ha.
My friend Tom, last week's Person of the Week, turned me on to a new group, Spoon. I have two CDs and they're both pretty good. I like it when someone turns me on to a new band (they're not new) and I actually like them. Speaking of great bands, Kings of Leon! Come on America, get on the stick! Maybe they already are big, I fear I'm out of touch in the music scene too.
That's it!
Have a great day --
Best,
Bob

I'm back...WE'RE back, can I get a witness?! To be accurate, I never left, let's go to the tape!
Thursday was Thanksgiving! I worked but I have to say, I didn't mind. After work our friend Sheryl had a few people over and I had a damn good time! So good, that I forgot to take a photo...damn! Thanks Sheryl!
Friday I woke up at noon...what can I say, 'tis the season to get drunk, ha ha. I missed out on all the black Friday sales! Ha ha, you would NEVER see me out at 6 AM for anything. The good news about shopping at 6 AM, you can get a 37" LCD TV for $899...The bad news...it's a Soyo, ha ha. You get what you pay for people! Friday night the plan was to go into the city and have dinner at Blue Smoke...it's a BBQ place. Our friend Chris from Nebraska was in town for a visit.
Can you guess which
one is Chris?
(File photo)
The nice thing about Blue Smoke besides the BBQ (and hanging with my friends)...
Mojitos!
Damn, they're tasty!
Saturday: Spike TV's Bondathon.
Sunday I did nothing.
Hey, have a great day!
Best,
Bob

Happy Thanksgiving!CLICK THIS TO HEAR A SPECIAL HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM BOB!
Before I sign off for the weekend (There will be no diary on Friday), I'd like to name a person of the week. My friend Tom and I really like Joe Strummer. There was a documentary about him showing at film festivals last year but I (and I think he) missed it. It hasn't been released in the theaters and it's not a DVD. What's a fan to do?! Well, Tom got on Ebay, did some digging and found it from some guy in Slovakia! The catch? It costs too much money to send a money order, so, desperate to see this film, Tom sends cash! Long story short, he gets it on Monday and even before he sees it, he lets me borrow it, so I can make my own copy! How cool is that?! Congratulations Tom, you're Bob's Person of the Week!
Bob's Person of the Week!Tell your friends!
Have a great holiday/weekend!
All my best,
Bob

Q: With everyone traveling to visit loved ones today, what's the quickest way I can knock out a diary that no one will read?
A: Hey, enjoy this classic bobborden.com from one year ago today (11-23-04):
I'm starting off today's diary with a thank you to Susie. She won my Radio Shack radio/watch a few weeks back. I'm thanking her because she sent me a thank you note. That was a nice way to start off a Monday. Mondays, can I get a witness? Anyway, It was unexpected, mostly because out of 5 contests, she's the only person to send a note in the mail. Cool.
You know what? I forgot to talk about something from my weekend in yesterday's diary. Saturday night, I spent more time than I care to admit, playing Iron Maiden songs with backwards messages.
Spooky but so
good!
I'd take the backwards messages, put them into an editing program and play them in reverse. I still couldn't understand what the message was but it was fun.
That last paragraph was a new feature to bobborden.com, i call it, "WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING?!" -- Tell your friends!
Also from yesterday's diary, I said that i took a 3-hour nap on Sunday. My boss Justin told me, "that wasn't a nap, you passed out," ha ha. I guess he's right, 3 hours is a long time to be out. Sorry for the confusion. That three hours really hurt when I couldn't get to sleep later that night.
Have you figured out that I don't have anything to say today? I was at work all day and that usually means a dull diary.
So, there you go. That's it for today!
Sincerely your internet friend,
Bob
---Wow, so much has changed for me in a year, ha ha. Have a good day...see ya tomorrow.
Best,
Bob

Four things today:
It should be noted that Dial's lavender & oatmeal soap smells like a French whore and thus, makes me smell like a French whore.
Thumbs down!
The whole apartment smells of lavender! OK, yes it's better than the normal smell of cat crap (I live like a hobo) but at what price...AT WHAT PRICE?! Never buy soap that's on sale.
2. I think the garage on my block (Sal), I think he's not there anymore...his sign is down. I have to find out what happened, he's a good guy, I talk to him (and say hello) all the time. Damn.
3. If you missed my Demolition Derby piece last Thursday, my internet friends, Jay & Walter, made it part of the Late Show Newsletter yesterday. Cut and paste this (I can't remember the code to make that a link), and enjoy:
http://www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/dave_tv/ls_dtv_comedy_clips.shtml
4. I wore my suede coat (not the real fancy suede) to work yesterday and it rained. To avoid damage on the walk home, I wore my office hooded sweatshirt home. Who is smarter than me? It's the little things!
Happy Tuesday!
Best,
Bob

Friday night I came home and fell asleep on the sofa...so much for Friday.
Saturday I woke up around 10:00, did nothing until 3:30 and then, you guessed it, laundry. Saturday night I had dinner with my friends:
[L to R]: Tiffany, Karin, Kipley &
Bob
We enjoyed Indian food and great conversation. And as a bonus, Kipley picked up the check! How nice is that?! Thanks! Hey, come to think of it, I think Kipley & Karin picked up the check, I think that's how it works when you're married. Thanks Kipley & Karin! It was an early dinner, I was home by 8:30. In a weird move, I laid down in my bed, fell asleep and woke up at 4:30 AM, ha ha, all my stuff was on! It's like the reverse of falling asleep on my sofa. Crazy world.
Sunday I woke up around 11:00. I just didn't feel like doing anything this weekend. I walked to my car to do the usual A & P run. On my way, I saw a guy stop by sewer, lean over and throw up, ha ha. I laugh because we've all been there...maybe not at 4 PM but all the same. He wiped off his shoes and on he went. Such is life.
In the checkout line, I was two people back. The woman checking out had a coupon for every item she was checking out...and she checked out a lot of items. There were no other open lanes, so I just stood there and meditated. I think I may have actually left my body, I remember looking down at myself and saying, 'you're never getting out of here...damn, that woman has a lot of coupons!'
Sunday was quesadilla night, mmmmmm good. Then I combed out the cats...excuse me for a second...YAWN! OK, I'm back.
That's it! Have a great week!
Best,
Bob

I said it before and I'll say it again; I like being on TV, ha ha. I hope you saw last night's Late Show, it was a damn good one! Now I can cross 'competing in a demolition derby' off my life 'to do' list. Here's some photos from a very fun day...by the way, that was my first and last race, ha ha. The photos:
Getting the car ready
Bob receiving some last-minute
advice from Late Show Director
Jerry Foley
Preparing to get the
crap knocked out of me
I'm in this mess!
The race is over! I'm
signing autographs for the kids
Here I am with Demolition Derby
super-fan, Rod
[L to R]: JC, Lee, Jerry,
Scott, Tara and Andrew
[L to R]: Andrew, Bob, Scott
(These guys built my car -- they were great!)
I"m writing this on Thursday night (as usual) and here's the list of people that called me as soon as my segment was over: Walter, "Sally", Mom, Tiffany and Kipley. Thanks dudes!
Another cool thing about the show last night was I got to briefly talk to Gary Dell'Abate from the Howard Stern show, I'm a fan, so that was cool. I said Hi to Howard but he didn't know who the hell I was, ha ha.
So that's it...great race, great show, great diary...HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
All my best,
Bob

Monday's diary, I talked about my weekend, running into different people and having an all-around good time: I get 2 comments. Tuesday's (lame) diary, I post a photo of a scarf and a rancid bowl of milk: 6 comments. I CAN'T FIGURE YOU PEOPLE OUT! While we're on the subject, I regret posting that photo, that's everything I hate about the internet and I just didn't think twice about it. Shame on me.
In better news, I'm sitting at my desk yesterday, I look up and saw something too priceless for words. Check this out:
[L to R] Paula, Lee
THEY'RE DRESSED THE SAME! How cute are they?! And here's the amazing thing -- they DID NOT plan that! Crazy world, crazy world.
I think there's 39 days until Christmas, I can't get my head around that. My point? Sometimes life is more about the journey than the destination.
Are you like me, do you love Fresca? I find the citrus/low calorie combination irresistible. So imagine my surprise when I walked down the soda isle and saw two new Frescas! Peach and Black Cherry, Holy crap, it's go time! I pick up a fridge pak of Black Cherry and wait until dinner to try it out.
Sparkling Black Cherry Citrus
Flavored Soda
Sunday was chicken quesadilla night at the Borden house (I say 'Borden house' but I really just mean me), I crack open the can, take a swig...absolutely disgusting! Fresca, what are you trying to do to me?! Anyway, stick to the original, that's my soda advice for 11/16/05. Time to switch to water.
OK, that's it.
Best,
Bob

Time for a new feature, I call it, Bob's Fall Fashion Preview...here we go:
A new scarf!
That was Bob's Fall Fashion Preview...tell your friends!
So, I'm doing the usual bi-weekly washing of my dishes last night and discovered this gem:
Gross!
(Weeks ago, this
was a bowl of milk)
That brings up an interesting question...why would I post that?! Sadly, I don't have an answer. Man, that was one funky bowl!
Speaking of funky bowl (?) -- that's it!
Have a good one.
Best,
Bob

"How was your weekend?"
Pretty good. I'm happy to report that I was able to get a haircut Friday morning before work. It's the little things...I always say that, I hope it's true because the big things suck, ha ha.
Saturday I woke up around 10. I didn't do much until 3:30, then I walked over to the laundry mat. Nothing exciting to report there. Then around 7:30, I made the trek into the city to have dinner with my brother and our friend Marc (with special appearance by The Informer). On my walk to the PATH train, I ran into one of my fellow jurors, wow. Thankfully, she was one of the good ones. We exchanged hatred for the the other idiots we served with and parted ways. There's a steak in Manhattan with my name on it, I had to make tracks. I got to the station and the train is pulling out, the worst. Back in the old days, you could run after a train and jump on, now, the doors just close in your face. We've come so far as a society but at what cost...AT WHAT COST!?
I get to the Strip House at 8:30 and meet up with George and Marc. Nice place, picture a PG-13 strip club/lounge vibe but they cook a mean steak, ha ha. Around 8:50, The Informer joined us and we were four strong.
[L to R] Marc, George,
Michael (AKA: The Informer)
[Insert] Bob
The place was packed and we didn't get a table until close to 9:30. In a move that I've never seen before, the hostess bought us a round of drinks to make up for the long wait -- very strong.
I had a great time and was glad I left the inner sanctum of my apartment to be social. Oh, here's the rundown of my meal: Caesar salad, 16 ounce New York Strip (their speciality), goose-fat potatoes, creamed spinach, beer, wine and a banana tart. I'm probably another good meal away from getting the gout, ha ha!
We parted ways, I walked to the PATH train and ran into a friend from work! How crazy is that? Amy and Kevin were headed back to NJ after a fun night in the city.
[L to R] Amy, Kevin
It was great to talk to someone cool vs. listening to other drunks acting all crazy. A nice way to end a nice evening.
Sunday my brother called me at 10:15, another way to say that is I woke up at 10:15, ha ha. He was headed back to Ohio and thanked me for coming out. Nice. I watched a little TV and then headed to Kohl's to exchange some shoes. You can make exchanges there at the register, how sweet is that? While I was waiting, I overheard a couple behind me. They just found each other after being separated for a while. Come to think of it, I don't think I heard her say anything.
Man: Where the F were you? I've circled around this store 5 times now. This is why you have to do this stuff alone! Here, I bought this...
He shows her his purchase for their kid...she's not thrilled...
Man: Oh, great, you don't like it! It's size 11!
It was funny to me at the time but after thinking about, you have to feel bad for the kid/wife. He was the typical 'Jersey tough guy' -- I didn't even need to turn around. Oh well, I got my shoes, ha ha!
From there, I hit Target and the A & P. What a beautiful day!
It has to be the little things
That's it! Have a great week!
Best,
Bob

It has to be the little thingsThat's it! Have a great week!

And that brings us to the end of another week. This was a quick one for me, all I did was work and sleep. Poor me, ha ha.
Anyway, did you see the story where some scientists are trying to find a link between exposure to a parasite found in cat droppings with the onset of schizophrenia? Wow. When I told my cats this, I don't mind telling you, they were a little pissed. So angry in fact, that they asked to say a few words...ladies and gentlemen, Billy and Evelyn:
"Hey, what about dog sh#t?
Did you ever think about that, f#&king assholes?!"
Ha ha...wow. Who would have thought that my cats talked like a bunch of drunken sailors? Live and learn.
Have I ever talked about the HGTV show, Small Space, Big Style? It's pretty good. People live in some pretty F'd up places, ha ha.
Getting a haircut this week was always just out of reach. I didn't have time, there was someone else in the chair when I did have time...today, Friday November 11th, 2005 I will get a haircut. Excuse me for a second...YAWN!
Where do all the goats go?
Hey, that's it -- have a great weekend.
Best,
Bob

So, I'm in the mood to wear my sneakers yesterday morning. I get my brand new, shiny New Balance sneaker box off the shelf to start the lacing process. I like New Balance because they run wide, in my case, EEEE. To find such a shoe, you have to really pay attention to the widths. I found the perfect shoe, with the perfect price, with the perfect width and I was gold. Now, I'm lacing the shoe and something seems odd...I check the size and it's a 14!
Oops!
I'm a big dude but not that big (I'm a size 12)! I was paying so much attention to the widths that I forgot to double check the size! Thank goodness I saved the receipt!
How's that for a story? How's that for a diary?!
That's it!
Best,
Bob

I didn't vote yesterday (I forgot) but I did play the lottery -- I have more faith in winning the lottery than I do in our leaders, ha ha. Honestly, after 10 years, I still feel like a guest in New Jersey. (Update: I didn't win the lottery)
I was playing an arcade game in the laundry mat this past weekend called Cruisn' World. It's a car game where you drive, you guessed it, around the world.
Cruisn' World
There's one section where you're racing on the Great Wall of China (hey, I just played the game, I didn't design it). A few seconds in the race, you can hear a girl say very enthusiastically, "The Great Wall Rocks!" Ha ha. I just wanted to share that.
For the first time yesterday I questioned why the hell I do this diary. I've been doing it for five years now...when is enough, enough?! When I got home, I thought of the voting comment and the video game comment but that's all I have. I wonder what I'd do if I didn't make this my creative outlet. I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet but some days, I wonder.
Is this photo art or a
waste of my time?
That's it! Have a great day.

Random stuff:
DirecTV was playing a free Queens of the Stone Age concert this weekend and I have to say, it was pretty damn good. So good that I bought their latest CD (the power of TV). Their new CD rocks! I never heard of them until Dave Grohl played the skins (drums) on a record they had out a few years back. I didn't buy the latest record when it came out because Grohl wasn't playing drums and because the bass played got fired -- I figured, OK, that's it for them. But once again, TV has shown me the light. Rock on Queens of the Stone Age!
QOTSA
Rock 'n' Roll 4-ever!
I tried on three shirts yesterday morning before I found one I liked. I thought that was odd because usually I just grab the first thing I put on.
A guy on the bus did something brilliant last night-- he was looking at menus of Hoboken restaurants, he got on his cell phone, called up a place and placed an order! Get it? When he gets off the bus, his food will be waiting for him! Now that's a smart SOB.
I'm going to get a haircut on the way to work today.
To answer the questions on my message board from yesterday: Lee, is there such a thing as a 'better protest?' -- Larry, the 'dancing band' is rooted in tradition, not to mention that it's a crowd pleaser. Jack, I won't be in Ohio for Thanksgiving. Spartacus, that's cool you play video games with your son.
That's it!
Have a great day.

Bob

Let's go straight to the weekend! Friday I had a late lunch with friends/co-workers, I ate a 16 ounce filet mignon...later that night I couldn't move. I got on the computer and saw a story on Drudge about some girls protesting Abercrombie and Fitch's new t-shirt line, here's what the fuss is about:
Wow
I have to say, I'm with the girls on this one, those shirts are so demeaning...ridiculous. Abercrombie and Fitch have pulled the shirts but who is the person that gave the OK in the first place? Makes me crazy. That reminds me of my t-shirts. I like to think of myself as an entrepreneur without a great idea. But that hasn't stopped me from trying to strike gold in the t-shirt biz, check it out:
Too predictable,
didn't catch on
The idea is right but
if you were good at Galaga you'd
have no need to buy it
This didn't test market
well at all (too soon?)
Ha ha, the sad part about those t-shirts is that the 'beer me' shirt is the only one that I didn't really have made, ha ha.
Saturday I woke up and started cleaning my apartment. I went crazy, it was good. I hit the laundry mat, A & P, Linens & Things and went home. Saturday night I had a lovely evening of conversation/drinks with _______. She's a good one.
Sunday I discovered that doing everything on Saturday didn't leave me with much to do. So, I sat on the sofa until about 4:30, ha ha. Sad but true, I can't even tell you what I watched. Sunday night I talked to the nephews/niece, they're all good.
That's it! Have a great day/week!

Bob

One of the great joys in life is being a fly on the wall and observing life's little oddities. It's even better when you get to observe someone you know -- such was the case yesterday morning. I was standing in Rupert's Hello Deli waiting for my order and in walks my friend/coworker, Steve Young. Steve is a creature of habit, everyday around lunch, he treats himself to some M & M's - yesterday was no exception. So, Steve looks at the candy rack and there are no M & M's! The next thing I know, Steve moves some customers out of his way and is on the floor, looking in the empty M & M box!
This is as angry as I've
ever seen Steve
He asks Rupert's business partner, May, to help him find some M & M's, and now she's looking! While this is going on, I point to Steve and say, 'You just made my diary' Ha ha! He accepts that and continued the search. Finally, a bag of peanut M & M's were found behind some other kind of candy and for the first time since Steve set foot in Rupert's, all is right with the world.
This is as happy as I've
ever seen Steve
For agreeing to have his likeness in today's diary, I'm going to give Steve a bag of M & M's. It's the least I can do, I'm going to dine out on this story for years...YEARS!
I bought some new headphones yesterday! I got tired of the cheap pairs that sound like crap, so I broke down and treated myself to a pair of Bang & Olufsen Form 2 headphones.
Sweet!
Man, they sound fantastic! Perfect for listening to November Rain, which I'm doing every night in November. I showed my new purchase to my friend Paula and she basically said that I look like an idiot with them on. This, I have to say, pissed me off! Because she kept saying it, over and over, "You're not going to wear those in public are you?" I don't need to get heckled on my headphone choice! And I'm past the point where I give a s%#t about what people think about me! We've since made up but good night nurse, I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut (I don't know what that means)! Bang & Olufsen have a sweet phone for sale, it's only $850, ha ha. For that much, the thing better make me dinner!
That's it! Have a great weekend!
Best,
Bob

"I want to make something very clear here, the Rockettes are not on strike..." -- Linda Schmidt Fox 5 News -
That was the opening story on the ten o'clock news last night...the musicians went on strike, causing the Radio City Christmas Spectacular to cancel two shows. The reporter (Linda Schmidt), just said that quote so seriously, I thought it was funny. But I think the bigger story is why the hell are people going to a Christmas show so early! Oh, that reminds me, I have to do my Valentine's Day shopping tomorrow, ha ha. See what I did?
I'm thinking about getting my haircut this week, excuse me for a second...YAWN! OK, I'm back. While I'm in the chair, I may get a professional shave. I don't think I've ever done that. I haven't shaved this week.
Stubble Cam
(The hat? That's what I wear when
I write the ol' diary, now you
know)
Something to think about. I really want to turn the channel on my TV but the damn remote is just out of my reach, I hate that!
Did you know there's a show called Toolbelt Diva? Is there such a thing as too much TV? That's all I have to say about that.
Now, it's time for me to listen to Guns N' Roses' November Rain (I'm doing this everyday in the month of November). Here I go..."When I look into your eyes, I can see a love restrained...I could rest my head just knowin' that you were mine....'Cause nothin' lasts forever...Even cold November rain" Fantastic!
The remote is STILL just out of reach, damn! Why must I be so lazy?! WHY??!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best,
Bob

I'm on the bus yesterday morning, sitting in the back row, as usual. Now, the back row is fine for four people but, it's not uncommon for a fifth (petite) person to squeeze in there. We get to the second to last stop and only 3 people, including myself, are in the back row. This is sweet because I can stretch my legs and relax. On the last stop (of course) a man and a woman get on. Slowly but surely, they walk to the back of the bus. The three of us suck it up and make room. The woman, and I'm not sure how to say this, especially since I'm a big guy, but let's just say, she ain't no ballerina. The boyfriend is equally as big and looks like he's one drunken night away from getting a neck tattoo. She sits down, not a big deal, still a lot of room. Then I look at the guy and I can see his wheels turning, he's going to sit down come hell or high water. There's not really any room in the back row but that hardly matters to him, he's figured out a solution. He sits down sideways and then turns his hips to face forward. When he does this, the woman quickly and without warning, shifts her body into mine. She pretty much hip checked me into the window. If you were standing on the street, this is what you would have seen at that moment:
Bus problems
And she does not move, she can't really -- the rest of the ride in, our bodies were touching, I just wanted to throw up, very uncomfortable.
Jack from my message board wanted to know what I'm listening to these days. Well Jack, I've gone back in time and am hooked on the Violent Femmes. I always knew their songs but never bought anything they did...I want to say they were before my time but that doesn't seem right. They were probably out when I was listening to heavy metal. My friend Tom gave me a copy of their CD and it's just great. Good lyrics, good vocals, good music. That's it right now, I'll listen to it for another couple of days and then I'll find something else.
Speaking of music news, every night for the whole month of November, I plan on listening to one of the greatest songs ever produced...of course I'm talking about Guns N' Roses' November Rain! So good! I'm still waiting for Chinese Democracy to drop, aren't we all?
Short and sweet! If you won the Mega Millions lotto last night, be kind and kick a million my way.
Have a great day!
Best,
Bob

Life's funny, you know? On Monday, I talked about how the bus screwed me over by being late. Then yesterday morning on the ride in, the bus was hell bent on getting me into the city on time. Traffic was was backed up over the viaduct, never a good sign. The driver sees this and cuts over to the other viaduct with less traffic and saves an easy 10 minutes! I have seen other drivers do this but it's rare. Then in the tunnel, he changes lanes, for no other reason than to get us into the city ASAP! Before I got off, I turned around and said, "Good driving." He looked at me and said, "Thanks." NJ Transit, I'm sorry we ever fought.
On my walk to work, I saw a guy in a suit, wearing a mask and a top hat. When I saw this, I said to myself, "Wow, F Him!" Is the guy going to work like that?! The whole thing just makes me mad -- Halloween is for kids! Right? Am I alone on this one?
I walked home last night with eyes in the back of my head! Kids were everywhere! And I saw enough broken eggs on the ground to make a pretty good-sized omelet. But I'm happy to report that I made it home without incident! Whew! I'm so happy it's November!
That's it! I'm going to keep 'em short and sweet this week. Don't bore us, get to the chorus!
Best,
Bob
